Day 12- La Tomatina Brunol

Day 12 27 August 2008 Yes today is the day that we had La Tomatina in Brunol )an hour from Valencia) as we got to the town, we had to walk down a street which looped around a small mountain to the town square. There were plenty of street vendors with 1 litre beers which we took advantage of and we also bought lovely scuba goggles for 3 euro. Yesterday i got my self a lovely paid of ripoff converse shoes for 10 euros which needless to say did not leave Brunol (together with the goggles and my t-shirt which was trashed). The excitement was in the air and everyone (all 40,000 of them) was pumped for a great morning. there was chanting and singing and a sole greasy pole in the end of the square with a large ham tied to the top. for nearly an hour people tried to climb the pole and get the ham. Eventually the ham was touched a large cannon fired and the lorry trucks with tomatoes came down the street throwing tomatoes into the crowd. Then it began. I had a tomato thrown right into the left eye of the google and it was on for young and old. What ensued was a 1.5 food fight which was one of the most amazing things in this world. I had a underwater camera which hopefully has some good shots. words can not really describe the mayhem and atmosphere. I waved to the tv helicopters so watch out on the news in the next couple of days. More photos once i have my film back from the photo shop tomorrow
