Day 21- Napoli, Italy

Day 21- 5 September 2008 Today we got up early and headed to the Termini Train Station in Rome via the metro and got on our Train to Naples. After an hour and a half we arrived at Naples and after a very long walk we found our hostel which is near the port. The main shopping street which starts at the train station is lined with people selling dodgy phones, watches, hand bags etc. One thing you notice is that napoli is much dirtier than Rome. Once checked in we went across the road to the port and found a bus to Pompeii and 40 minutes later we were at the famous ruins. Pompeii is a whole city where Mt Verciuvius erupted and engulfed the city in lava. Years later archeologist's have excavated about 55 hetres of the city and you can walk along its streets, see into houses, chapels and back yards. It is amazing how much has been excavated and how many mosaics, murals and other parts are still like they were prior to the lava flowing. It was a very very very hot day today and tough going as there is not much shade and you walk a lot. After thoroughly exploring the site, we headed back on the bus (which was very difficult in finding a bus stop) and got back to Naples in time for some gelati. Tomorrow we head to the Isle of Capri and hopefully the Blue Grotto....
