Day 23- 7 September 2008
Today we got on the train and headed to Florence. We arrived at 12pm and checked into our hotel which was only a few hundred metres from the train station which was great. We then headed out and saw the Galleri D, Academia which we just walked right to the ticket office without any que. We walked around the first room which housed some very nice paintings, then we walked into the nex corridor and there was no mistakening thefact that at the end of this very long room was a dome and a very large figure standing on a pedisil. Yes it was Michaelangelo,s David, ini all its glory. It was very hard to concentrate on the sculptures which lined the long room as i had to keep moving my eyes of the statute. We finally got to the end of the room and it was simply impressive. Towering over you there was David a magnificent statute carved by Michaelangelo frm one piece of marble. After many looks which checked out the rest of the gallery, which although very nice paled into comparison to David.
We then headed down the street to the Pizza del duomo and checked out this magnificant catherdral. The colours of the exterior walls were quite unique and most beautiful. We then headed inside and the scale of the interior was equally impressive. We felt we didn,t have the energy to tackle climbing the bell tower or the Cupola today, so we left that for another day.
We then explored the streets of Florence. It is a very clean city compared to Naples and the street scapes are charming. We came across a street performer singing opera and a beutiful old carousel. We also came across a market selling leather goods of every description. Then we went to a square called pizza di signori which has a nice open air area full of statutes :its very pretty and the fun police (just like the ones on the spanish steps) are in action making sure would be sinners are not drinking, eating or singing....
We then headed past uffizi and then too a sneak peak of ponte Vecchio.
Florence is a lovely city with charming laneways and streets.
