Day 9- Edinburgh

Day 9 24 August 2008 Today was a late start given the early morning (After getting back from hitting the town i needed to do some washing as i had no clean socks left. I did some walking around in Edinburgh and checked out some of the back alleys and major streets. some of the buildings here are ancient and the whole part of the city is actually a world heritage site !! I ended up at the Palace of Holyrood which is the Queens official residence when she is in Scotland and the previous residence of Mary Queen of Scotts prior to her beheading by Queen Victoria (after a short 19 year spell in the Tower of London). The Palace is relatively unguarded when the Queen is not in residence and there are no ceremonial guards like the Queens other palaces. Most of the building is not as grand as the other palaces i have seen. I also found out that the Queen only spends 1 week living at the palace each year and she mainly spends her time at Balmorroal. This was somewhat disappointing to hear. After the tour i headed for the Royal Mile which goes from the palace to the castle. After a little bit of window shopping i arrived at the Scotch Whiskey Association Experience which goes through the making of scotch and the history. At the end you get a ride on the Barrel which by all advertisements looks like a fast paced exciting roller coaster. But alas, it is a ride that goes around to wax figures at a speed slower than a person in a wheelchair with one busted wheel. At the end you can try whiskies from each corner of Scotland which is interesting and not too bad in taste. From there i headed across town and got on the bus for a Scottish night in a pub just out of Edinburgh. This included a try of some haggis (which the Scottish can keep to them selves) we were also provided with a performance of a bag piper who was very good including a pretty good joke teller. After this we headed to a vodka bar called revolution which had a large assortment of vodka flavours (favourite bubblegum) and then off to Scottish pub called maggie dickson (who was hung for concealing pregnancy and found knocking on the casket 2 hours later alive and then released) and then a Irish pub. Tomorrow we head on the bus back to Edinburgh.
